At Connect Tango, we believe tango is for everyone.

We help new people discover tango in a welcoming, achievable, rewarding and socially connected way from the beginning. Whether you arrive curious, nervous, excited, or simply looking for something new, our goal is to help you feel comfortable starting your tango journey.

We believe people learn tango best when they feel encouraged, socially included and progressively challenged — not judged, intimidated or overwhelmed.

Run by Canberra tango dancers & teachers

Connect Tango is run by Sophie and Nivan, with long-standing Canberra dance teacher Karen also supporting our teaching team. Together, we share a love of tango and a commitment to helping people enjoy learning it.

We’re also proud to be part of Canberra’s broader tango community. We are members of the Tango Social Club of Canberra and run the Club’s tango intro courses on a volunteer basis.

Other experienced local dancers also help support our teaching and events. We also encourage students to learn from a range of teachers across Canberra — it’s a small community connected by a shared love of tango. For us, it’s important you find a teacher or a class that connects with you, so try all that’s on offer!

We make learning tango a positive experience

Starting tango can feel intimidating. There are new movements, new people, new social norms, new music, and often a completely new way of learning.

That’s why we create supportive learning pathways that help new dancers gradually build confidence, connection and skills.

Our aim is not simply to teach steps. We want people to feel comfortable at classes, practicas and social dances. When people build friendships and discover the enjoyment that comes from dancing with others – that makes us happy!

We make tango easier to stick with, and rewarding

One of our core goals is to remove barriers that often stop people continuing with tango.

We think carefully about:

  • how beginners are introduced to the dance
  • how people build confidence socially and technically
  • how to make learning feel achievable
  • how to support different learning styles
  • how to create positive and motivating experiences that encourage people to keep going

We take an evidence-informed approach to teaching and learning, drawing on different educational tools, practice structures, social experiences and feedback methods to help people learn more effectively and enjoyably.

That doesn’t mean making tango rigid or overly technical. Quite the opposite. We want learning to feel human, encouraging and fun!

We want to help people connect, through tango

At its heart, tango is about connection — to music, to movement and to other people.

Many people come to tango looking for something more: a creative outlet, a social opportunity, a reason to get off screens, a new challenge, or simply a better night out. We love helping people discover those things through dance.

Whether you want to dance socially, develop strong technique, meet new people or simply try something different, we hope Connect Tango helps make tango feel accessible, enjoyable and worth continuing.

We’re excited to help more people find their place in Canberra’s tango community.
